When new clients come to see me they often say to me that they don't understand why their waistline is expanding.
They're eating what they think is healthy and are doing all the right things in their books and yet the weight is still increasing.
When it comes to weight loss though it's not a simple calculation of just eat less and move more.
There are many reasons why we're not able to shift the weight and today I wanted to touch on the common ones.
Starting with....
1. Eating Inconsistently
The body derives energy from nutrient rich foods which is needed for key bodily processes and chemical reactions that keep us alive. When we skip meals or eat inconsistently there is a lack of available energy for those key processes and reactions to occur which can cause your metabolism to slow down in order to conserve energy.
2. Peri-Menopause, Menopause and Hypothyroidism
These stages of life and condition can cause the metabolism to slow down and if we aren't eating the right types of foods and amounts we can easily gain weight.
3. Physical or Psychological Stress
Cortisol is a hormone that the body releases when you feel physical or psychological stress and shuts down physiological processes (ie. slowing your metabolism) and speeding up ones you need to survive in the moment such as insulin production and raising blood pressure. As insulin goes up your blood sugar drops which can cause you to feel more hungry.
4. Lack of Sleep
Sleep duration has long been linked to the body's production of appetite-regulating hormones. A lack of sleep is associated with higher levels of the hormone ghrelin (increases appetite) and lower levels of the hormone leptin (helps you feel less full). In other words a lack of sleep can cause you to eat more and therefore gain weight.
In Summary...
If you are affected by any one these start by looking at ways to eat consistently throughout the day (inc. the right kinds of foods for your body type and age), better manage a condition, reduce stress and improve sleep.
A few simple changes can really make a big difference to your waistline overall.
And, if you'd like some help with this so you can lose weight (without dieting), improve your relationship with food, or manage a disease/condition in a way that's simple, easy and sustainable...
